Livestation, a new interactive global broadcast service, has won an award for digital innovation in technology. The breakthrough broadband platform was one of the finalists in the first ever MediaGuardian Innovation Awards. The MEGAS, launched to recognise innovations in media, were awarded at a ceremony hosted at the 02 Arena in London.
Currently in technical trial with broadcasters such as the BBC, Livestation allows users to receive a range of television and radio channels over broadband, anywhere in the world.
Livestation will launch later this year with a range of news channels from leading international broadcasters, bringing them together in a single simple to use player.
A pre-release version of the free Livestation player can be downloaded from the Livestation website.
"The judges thought this was a clever and innovative idea; using peer to peer technology whilst reducing broadcasting costs. They were very excited about the possibilities for Livestation's technology in the future." said Brent Hoberman, co-founder of lastminute.com, who chaired the panel of judges for the award.
Other judges for the category included Channel 4 News presenter Samira Ahmed, broadcaster Matthew Bannister, Google executive Matt Brittin, Ashley Highfield, the director of future media and technology at the BBC, and the Guardian’s Steve Busfield.
“Winning this prestigious award is a great achievement for the team,” said Matteo Berlucchi, CEO Livestation, “Combining the benefits of broadcasting with the benefits of broadband, we believe Livestation will transform the future of online television and radio.”
