Livestation - broadcasting minority voices

The Democratic Voice of Burma is the latest channel to join Livestation

01 April 2009

Livestation, which streams live global news over broadband, has expanded its remit in order to help broadcast the voices of those living in areas where freedom of expression is suppressed or limited.

The Democratci Voice of Burma

Our first official partner in this field is The Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB), a non-profit Burmese media organisation committed to responsible journalism.

DVB began broadcasting programming into Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) via shortwave radio in 1992. Three years ago they expanded into satellite TV broadcasts into Myanmar. The aim, according to DVB is to reach ten million Burmese with, what they claim, is the first free and independent Burmese language television channel.

DVB, says they aim to:

• provide accurate and unbiased news to the people of Burma
• promote understanding and cooperation amongst the various ethnic and religious groups of Burma
• encourage and sustain independent public opinion and enable social and political debate
• impart the ideals of democracy and human rights to the people of Burma.

The organisation, which is run by Burmese based in Norway is funded in part by a number of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), such as the Free Voice of the Netherlands, the National Endowment for Democracy, and the Freedom of Expression Foundation.

Livestation welcomes DVB to our network of channels as we continue to expand our news offering in order to offer multiple perspectives on the world's news.
